Seals Meet Volunteers

Parent Participation

Parent participation is the heart of our organization. Participating as an adult in the SEALS organization can be a fun and fulfilling experience. It takes over 50 parents to "run" a swim meet. Parent workers will be required to work at the meets, their children participate in throughout the season. There are at least two sessions per meet. Depending on the number of participants this may be increased and the time shortened for each session. If you fail to check in at the meet, your child will be ineligible to swim in the next meet. Do not worry if you do not have experience, we will train you. Please refer to the job descriptions listed on the next few pages to find a job that suits your interests.

We want to express our sincere appreciation to those parents, guardians, and friends who do give so much of their time to this quality program for our children.

Won't you be one of "The Few, The Proud, The Marine Mammals" (SEALS)?

HELP @ SWIM MEETS (no experience required):

Timers - Time swimmers using the team provided stop watches and record the times on the swimmers' event entry cards. Three timers will be in each lane and the Head Timer will have backup watches in the event you or your stopwatch goofs on a race. THIS REALLY IS THE BEST SEAT TO WATCH A SWIM MEET.

Ribbon Writers - This essential job ensures all swimmers get their rewards and move on toward improved self-esteem. Ribbon Writers receive the computer printed labels from the scorers' table and place labels on ribbons.

Ready Area Assistants - Assist ready area coordinators placing swimmers by event and lane on the ready area benches and moving swimmer groups from the ready area to the starting blocks. This is another good place to see the meet.

Runners - A minimum of two, well-organized people collect entry cards from timers and deliver them to the scorers' table. This is a fast-paced, fun job during the 10 & under (25 yard) events.

Concessions - A key function to ensure the team raises funds to keep our registration fees the lowest in the league. Work only during home swim meets to setup concessions, sell 'stuff'' and clean up the concession area.

Setup / Cleanup - At home meets, set out (and later return) chairs and tables for swimmers, timers, scorers, and clerks of course. At away meets, setup (and later take down) team tents.

Head Timer - Encourages parents to volunteer for timing during home and away meets; coordinates timers' schedules (usually two sessions per meet); coordinates runners; tarts two or three extra stopwatches for timers who may miss a start or have malfunctioning stopwatches.

Head Scorer - Determines official times from event entry cards and coordinates computer entries.

Head Ribbon Writer - Coordinates ribbon writers (affixes labels to ribbons) for all meets, both home and away.

Ready Area Coordinators:

Coordinator #1 - Calls for and organizes swimmers by event and lane in the ready area. Coordinates ready area helpers. Need good lungs and high tolerance for child chatter.

Coordinator #2 - Moves full groups of swimmers from ready area to the blocks. Coordinates their helpers (at least one needed). Requires keen eye to keep swimmers from moving up too soon and swimming in wrong events, which may cause major delays in the meets.

Clerk of Course (CCSL training required) - Receives scratches and substitutions from coaches and makes appropriate changes to event entry cards, entry lists, and score sheets. This person also combines events, when possible, to keep the meet duration as short as possible. This person also determines eligibility of swimmers.

Starters (CCSL training required) - Calls swimmers to the blocks, starts each heat of races, calls false starts and possibly some stroke and turns.

Referees (CCSL training required) - Senior official at swim meets responsible for (final authority) all decisions and rule interpretations. Starter and Referee may be the same person during a swim meet.

Stroke & Turn Judges (CCSL training required) - Responsible to judge (generally four lanes) the technical form of the swimmers' strokes and turns in accordance with league rules. Responsible to disqualify and explain disqualification to swimmers in an effort to improve the swimmers' performance.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP:

Team Representative - Experience and knowledge of CCSL / TAAF rules are essential for this person to be the primary contact for swim meet officials, parents, and coaches.

Publicity Committee - During the summer swim season, publish and distribute weekly newsletter, with calendar; prepare weekly press releases and submit to local newspapers in Deer Park, Pasadena, and Houston; decorate and maintain the bulletin board at the pool; maintain a scrap book of all newspaper articles.

Records & Awards Committee - Keep current database of all swimmers' times in a computer database; prepare reports for individual swimmers and the coaches to monitor progress; work with coaches to determine appropriate awards for most improved, high point, record-breaking, and most valuable swimmers.

Roster Coordinator - Maintain up-to-date roster database of all team members and
communicate new/additional swimmers to the CCSL Roster Coordinator every
Monday during the swim season.

Registration - Coordinate all registration activities in conjunction with the City of Deer Park; organize people and other necessary items to register swimmers for the program.
